SitePoint, Head of Content (Aug 2011 – June 2024)
SitePoint is an Australian media company that specialises in publishing educational content for web developers. I was responsible for planning and producing all of the company’s content, comprising a popular blog that serves around 1 million visitors per month, an online learning platform with over 10,000 subscribers, a newsletter with around 450,000 subscribers, and social media channels.
Achievements included:
- Leading the content team through a major transition as the company moved from being primarily a publisher of books to becoming a successful learning platform business
- In conjunction with our SEO team, I recently pioneered the smart use of generative AI to enhance existing content, helping to improve traffic by around 15% this year.
- Developing content strategies to take advantage of new opportunities offered by our digital platform, including covering new technologies and introducing new content formats, such as interactive online content and video
- Introducing agile long-form content production processes and tooling that have reduced typical lead times by around 25%, while maintaining quality and improving author satisfaction
GigaOM, Editor (Jan 2009 – Aug 2011)
Part of the GigaOM network, WebWorkerDaily was an ahead-of-its-time multi-author blog that covered the future of work (encompassing remote work, coworking, freelancing, productivity, and more). As editor, I had responsibility for the site’s content.
Achievements included:
- Having our content syndicated by outlets including The New York Times and CNN
- Co-chairing and hosting Net:Work, a sold-out conference in San Francisco on the topic of the future of work.
- Expanding the writing team with a more diverse team of writers to help broaden the site’s output
Carsonified, Editor (Aug 2008 – Dec 2008)
ThinkVitamin was a blog for web professionals.
Achievements included:
- Recruiting a team of high profile writers
- Hosting The Future of Mobile, a sold-out conference in London about the mobile web
SitePoint, Managing Editor (Apr 2003 – Jun 2008)
As Managing Editor, I was responsible for establishing and running the company’s book publishing programme.
Achievements included:
- Establishing the company’s book publishing programme: recruiting and leading the books team; developing processes to enable the team to publish around 12 titles per year; establishing relationships with retailers, distributors, and printers
- Publishing several category bestseller titles, including The CSS Anthology and The Principles of Beautiful Web Design, which have gone on to earn around $1.8m AUD and $1.7m AUD respectively in gross print sales across several editions
